Sir Keir Starmer could switch his allegiance from Europe to the US when it comes to creating peace in Ukraine as the UK could be cut from a £125 billion EU defence fund. It was reported earlier this week that arms companies from the UK will be excluded from a new £125 billion EU defence fund unless the government signs a security pact with Brussels.

Now European leaders are also reportedly drawing up plans to reduce the United States’ dominance in NATO, amid concerns over America’s commitment to the alliance. The Financial Times reported that proposals may be presented to Donald Trump, outlining a five or ten-year strategy for Europe to assume greater responsibility for the continent’s security. One official told the outlet: “We’re starting those talks but it is such a big task that many are overwhelmed by the scale of it.”

Concerns over reliance on the US have been amplified by the unpredictable tenure of President Trump, who has unsettled NATO allies with threats of annexation and overt clashes in the Oval Office.

An official questioned: “You need a deal with the Americans and it is unclear if they will be willing to do it. Can you even trust them to hold to it?”.

Nations such as the UK, France, Germany, and Nordic countries are participating in the discussion rounds, which have been characterised as “informal but structured”.

As things stand, Europe heavily leans on the US for an extensive range of military equipment and unique capabilities essential for defence.

Several European countries depend on American military prowess for their nuclear capabilities, utilising missiles engineered and maintained by the US.

US defence authorities have, however, reaffirmed their commitment to NATO and its fundamental principle of collective defence as outlined in Article 5.
