A so-called battlebus used by Labour’s Angela Rayner which clocked up more than 5,000 miles during the General Election campaign is reportedly under investigation by the police.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the bright red vehicle, emblazoned with “Vote Labour” and “Change”, is now at the centre of a “substantial and detailed complaint” concerning how election expenses were submitted by Ms Rayner’s party colleague, Labour MP Lizzi Collinge.

It’s reported Ms Collinge, who won the seat of Morecambe and Lunesdale from the Conservatives in July, declared she had spent £18,446.96 on expenses, under the allowed limit of just over £20,000.

But it’s alleged police are now examining claims the cost of Ms Rayner visiting the constituency on the Labour battlebus should have been included in the expenses total submitted by Ms Collinge.

The complaint is understood to centre on a visit by Ms Rayner and other shadow ministers to Morcambe and Lunesdale on June 4 last year.

It’s reported officers are also looking into the cost of the vehicle being declared for visits to other key seats during the race to win votes at the ballot box.

Those found guilty of failing to register all election expenses can face up to a year in jail, and the limits on spending depend on the number of voters in a constituency and whether it is an urban or rural area.

A Labour spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “The Labour Party is completely confident that all the relevant declarations have been made with regards to the battlebus by the party in the proper way, in line with the rules.

“Ms Collinge has made all the relevant declarations with regards to her election and unless any evidence can be presented to suggest this is not the case, it would be wrong to suggest otherwise.”

The spokesperson added: “All necessary declarations have been made in line with the rules, including with regards to the “Change” battlebus.”

Express.co.uk have contacted Ms Collinge’s office for comment.

Lancashire Police told Express.co.uk: “We received a complaint in December about alleged irregularities in the campaign in the Morecambe and Lunesdale constituency leading up to the parliamentary elections in July last year.

“We are in the process of assessing the information provided to confirm if any criminal offences have taken place.”

It’s not the first time the use of a battlebus by a political party has come under scrutiny from the police. After the 2015 election campaign the CPS examined expenses relating the use of such a vehicle by the Conservatives.

The expenses came under investigation after disputes over whether they should be declared as national or local, when the bus was used to support constituency candidates.

The probe eventually led to a failed prosecution of Tory MP Craig Mackinlay, which centred on his contest for the South Thanet seat with Nigel Farage.
