The Superprix was going strong as Formula 3000 cars were racing around the streets of Birmingham. Operating from 1986 to 1990, this was the first.

Phil Collins was supporting his mate Eric Clapton in concert at the NEC and Rod Stewart also played the venue this year.

Roy Wood of Wizzard and Ali Campbell of UB40 and Ruby turner were all performing at the Heartbeat 1986 concert at the NERC Arena raising money for the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

The Motor Show was on at the NEC with Porsche displaying a car in a globe.

President of the International Olympic Committee, Juan Antonio Samaranch was in Brum as we made our bid for the Birmingham 1992 Summer Olympics.

He visited various sites around the region. We would have to wait till 2022 for a major sporting event to come to our patch with the Commonwealth Games.
