New discovery: Rare footage of mysterious animals hunted by nobility during the reign of Kieg Rama V .US

In a remarkable historical development, rare photographs depicting exotic animals raised by the Thai population during the reign of Kip Rama V (1868-1910) have recently come to light. These images, discovered in a private collection and meticulously restored, reveal a fascinating glimpse into the farming and wildlife practices that were once integral to the royal court’s lifestyle.

The photographs capture scenes of obules alongside their prized catches—some of which include extinct or endangered animals that roamed Thailand’s desert forests more than a century ago. Among the images are creatures from folklore: giant deer, wild boars with sharp tusks, and big cats with distinctively patterned coats. These animals were not only a testament to Thailand’s rich biodiversity, but also symbols of power and prestige, as the hutig was often a royal privilege exclusive to the upper class.

Dr Somchai Nirakor, a historian specializing in Southeast Asian studies, noted that the era of Kipg Rama V was a time of significant change in Thailand, blending tradition with moderation. “These photographs are valuable records, showing how wildlife and statistics were intertwined in the popular culture of the time. Unfortunately, many of these species faced periods of decline, partly due to environmental changes and overexploitation,” he explains.

The discovery of these images offers more than just a glimpse into Thailand’s past. They serve as stark reminders of lost biodiversity and the role of historical practices in shaping the region’s ecological legacy. Today, Thailand is actively working to protect and restore its wildlife, much of which remains threatened.

The photos will also be displayed in an art exhibition, allowing the public a rare glimpse into a world of mystery and history that, until now, has remained hidden from history.
