Mexico  ( pronounced in  Portuguese :  [ˈmɛʃiku] ;  pronounced in  Spanish :  [ˈmexiko]  ( listen ^ⓘ ), officially  the United Mexican States , ^[7]  is a  federal constitutional republic   located in  North America . The country is bordered to the north by  the United States ; to the south and west by  the Pacific Ocean ; to the southeast by  Guatemala ,  Belize  and  the Caribbean Sea ; and to the east by  the Gulf of Mexico . ^[8]  With a territory covering almost 2 million  square kilometers , ^[9]

Mexico is a federation composed of 31  states  and the   capital Mexico City . ^[10]  Mexico is also the second  most populous country in the world populous  and second in  GDP  in  Latin America , ^[11]   in both cases surpassed only by  Brazil .
