A notable encounter between President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer culminated in a significant moment when Sir Keir “interrupted” the US leader.

The footage of the interruption went viral on X, capturing Starmer as he was seen “clearly correcting” Trump regarding the financial aid given to Ukraine during the conflict.

Public observers have noted that the UK Prime Minister “doesn’t hesitate” to challenge Trump’s assertions about funds provided to Ukraine.

Trump said: “We want to have a little bit of luck, the European nations got their money back by giving the money, we don’t get the money back. Biden made a deal for $350 billion and I thought it was a very unfair situation.”

However, Sir Keir countered with: “We’re not getting all of ours, I mean, quite a bit of ours was gifted, it was given. Mainly it was gifted, actually.”

The stance taken by the Prime Minister has led many to draw favourable comparisons to French President Emmanuel Macron, who also recently engaged with Trump.

An online commenter wrote: “Starmer interrupts Trump to correct his false claim that European nations ‘get their money back’ from Ukraine, ‘Mainly it was gifted, actually.'”

Another commenter praised the approach, writing: “Good to see Starmer follow Macron in calmly but clearly correcting Trump’s outright lies on European support for Ukraine. Trump shows total disrespect and contempt for foreign leaders thinking that he can get away with telling easily disproven lies about their countries.”

Another user commented: “Like president Macron just days ago, PM Starmer doesn’t hesitate to correct Trump that European nations do not expect get their money back from Ukraine because it was ‘gifted’.”

This remark followed President Macron’s interruption of Trump regarding Ukraine funding during which the US President claimed that European countries were “loaning” money to Ukraine and expecting to “get their money back.”

However, Macron disputed this by stating that much of Europe’s financial support for Ukraine took the form of loans, guarantees, and grants, including “real money”.

Clear about the financial implications of the conflict, Macron declared: “This war cost all of us a lot of money, and this is the responsibility of Russia because the aggressor is Russia.”

Trump replied: “Just so you understand, Europe is loaning the money to Ukraine. They get their money back.” Macron corrected him, replying: “No. To be frank, we paid 60% of the total effort… we provided real money to be clear.”

Following the exchange, Trump appeared on Fox Business where he referred to Macron as a “friend of mine” but criticized him and other European leaders for inaction in ending the warfare.

Trump said: “They didn’t do anything either. The war’s going on, no meetings with Russia, no nothing… They haven’t done anything. Macron is a friend of mine, and I’ve met with the Prime Minister and he’s a very nice guy… [but] nobody’s done anything.”
